Podcasts, podcasts, podcasts... I record them, I produce them, I promote them... there's a whole lotta podcasting going on in my little digital services company.
All podcasts require audio, but not all audio needs to be a podcast. Sometimes it's about capturing a story, something that interests me greatly. Allow me to cite a few recent examples...
Brad Jones, the Funeral Director and owner of Ridley Funeral Home, lost his father-in-law Joe recently. For a couple of years now I've been chatting with him about recording stories about someone at their funeral service. When Joe passed away, Brad invited me to do just that after Joe's service at Ridley Funeral Home.
So I set up my studio on a table in a room at Ridley Funeral Home and his friends and family were invited to sit down with me for a conversation. My role was to make the speaker comfortable and then capture a story or two about Joe. I believe I am very good at this.
At the end of the two hours, I had about a dozen precious pieces of audio from Joe's children, his grandchildren, and other friends and family. I took that home and edited together a beautiful tribute to the man that was shared with his widow and other members of the family. It's something very special.
A couple of times recently, I've set up my studio at 1 Yorkville to talk to the good people at theBespoke\\WellnessGroup and their happy clientele. My role was to make the guest feel comfortable and to capture a great story or two. Then, it's back to the editing room, also known as the TMDS basement studio. Olympica medalist Alysha Newman visits in early December to share another testimonial about theBespoke\\WellnessGroup.
In a couple of weeks, I'll be moderating a panel at an event celebrating the launch of Gary Topp's book "He Hijacked My Brain". I'll have 60 minutes to capture stories from Gary himself, and a panel consisting of Colin Brunton, Jeff Silverman and Ivar Hamilton. This is a live event at The Concert Hall, and it's now sold out, but but this audio will be recorded.
Not all audio is intended to be shared as a podcast, and if you're looking to partner with a fiercely independent story gatherer with a passion for audio, I'm your guy. Write me at mike@torontomike.com and let's talk.
