Growing up in the 80s, everyone was straight. Unless you were gay. Otherwise, everyone was straight.
In the school yard, a go-to insult you'd hurl at someone would be the F-slur or you'd just call someone "gay". If something sucked, it was "gay". We giggled at The Flintstones theme commanding us to "have a gay ol' time".
In 1993, Nirvana released the highly anticipated follow-up to Nevermind, In Utero. I bought my copy of In Utero the first day it was available. I was at U of T at the time, and literally walked to Yonge and Dundas.
On All Apologies, Kurt sings "everyone is gay". I never really knew what that lyric meant, but I know how I interpret it in 2024.
Sexuality is fluid, and at its core non-gender-specific. You're attracted to whomever you're attracted to, with labels like "straight", "gay" or "bi" having little relevance. After all, everyone is gay. Sexuality is fluid, and that's true for all of us.
