Of Bleach and Reservoir Dogs

Tonight, after a long day of cycling, watching soccer, swimming and hanging with the family, I threw on Reservoir Dogs. I love the opening scene in the diner. Heck, I like it all, but I wasn't nearly cool enough in 1992 to see it in theatres.

The guy who owned my local video strore recommended I rent a VHS copy of Reservoir Dogs because he said it was great. I had never heard ot it, but I took his advice because in the pre-internet days, video store employees were vital sources of what was percolating in the underground. I loved Reservoir Dogs then, and I love it now. Pulp Fiction I saw in theatres... twice.

I also wasn't cool enough to own Bleach before Nevermind. Nevermind came out, 102.1 started playing Smells Like Teen Spirit, and I bought the CD downtown. I loved it, and then learned it was not Nirvana's debut album. I returned to the record shop and picked up Bleach. What an album!

Tarantino's debut film led to his masterpiece a couple of years later, and Nirvana's debut album led to Nevermind. I wasn't there for the beginning, but I'm glad I got on these trains early enough. I'm still riding high in '24.
