When I got married the first time, my occupation was grocery clerk. I worked at a Food City located at The Galleria Mall at Dufferin and Dupont. As a grocery clerk,I was responsible for grocery items, which was basically everything that didn't belong to the produce, meat or bake shop departments.
I was paid by the hour, so the goal was to get scheduled for more hours. I set my availability around my university classes and hoped for 20+ hours. There was competition from other grocery clerks for these precious hours, most with seniority, so I needed to think strategically.
There seemed to be an abundance of hours available for cashiers, so I talked the cashier manager into training me on cash so I could get hours in both grocery and on cash. Cobbled together, I could work 30+ hours!
So that's what happened. They trained me on cash, and I'd work some cashier shifts in addition to my grocery shifts. I was the only male cashier.
All these years later, it's still pretty rare to get a male cashier at a grocery store. I wasn't the first male cashier, nor the last, but I am part of an exclusive club.
