"(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" is one of my favourite songs of all-time, but it's the cover I dig. That's right, Elvis Costello's "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" is a cover.
"(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" is a Nick Lowe song, initially released by Lowe with his band Brinsley Schwarz on their 1974 album The New Favourites of... Brinsley Schwarz. It was not a hit.
The song was most famously covered by Elvis Costello and the Attractions, who recorded a version of the song that was released as a B-side to Lowe's 1978 solo single "American Squirm". The cover was so popular it was included on the American version of Costello's 1979 album Armed Forces.
I grew up thinking it was an Elvis original, but no... it's a Nick Lowe jam.
