On July 1, 2015, the Leafs traded Phil Kessel to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The return was forwards Nick Spaling and Kasperi Kapanen, defenceman Scott Harrington and a 1st and 3rd round draft pick. Kapanen's a skilled young forward but the Leafs are in desperate need of Kap space. (The author regrets this awful dad joke.)
Kapanen's career highlight is this golden goal he scored for Finland against Russia in 2016. Dude has skillz.
Here's the complete trade.
To Pittsburgh:
- Kasperi Kapanen
- Jesper Lindgren
- Pontus Aberg
To Toronto:
- 2020 1st round pick (#15 overall)
- Evan Rodrigues
- Filip Hallander
- David Warsofsky
The real return appears to be that first rounder.
