I see the San Diego Padres have cut David Wells. That might be the end of the road for Boomer. He's a Blue Jays draft pick from 1982 who had a couple of tours of duty here in Toronto. I was a fan and I'll always remember the night we spent together at the Molson Amphitheatre back in 2000.
I was there to see the Stone Temple Pilots and Red Hot Chili Peppers and we had really good seats. David Wells was sitting very close to us and he was like a rock star. The crowd loved him and he clearly loved these bands. Of course, what's not to like?
Off the top of my head, I can't think of a more rock star player to play in this city. We've had mega stars, and rebel rousers like Charles Oakley, but there was only one David Wells. He was larger than life.
