The St. John's Maple Leafs fourteen year history is officially over. They were ousted from the AHL playoffs last night and will never return to St. John's. They will change uniforms and play out of the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto as the Marlies next season.
Covering these AHL games was my contingency plan in lieu of covering my beloved NHL Leafs. When the owners locked out the players, I started recapping St. John's games. It was a very enjoyable regular season and even though it ended abruptly, I'm glad I did it. I learned a great deal about future NHL Leafs and as the team moves to my city I'm sure local coverage will increase and I may even end up going to a game or two. If the NHL can't get it's act in gear by the fall, I do it again next year.
