Ontario's Attorney General Michael Bryant has announced a plan to rid my province of all pit bulls, making it illegal to buy or bring the dog into Ontario. I only wonder what took him so long and why we didn't do this years ago.
Every time I pass a pit bull, I fear for my safety. As the father of two children, I won't even walk them in the vicinity of one of these ticking time bombs. I have no doubt in my mind that this breed of dog is inherently dangerous. Pit bulls account for a little over one per cent of the dog population, but are involved in half the serious incidents involving dogs. Banning them makes sense.
Before you brand me as some city-livin'-dog-hater, I'll remind you I've been living with a dog for over eight years now. Booner even sleeps in my bed but I know she couldn't hurt a fly if she wanted to, and I know she doesn't want to.
With so many wonderful breeds of dog, I've often wondered why some defend the pit bull so adamantly. How many Ontarians have to be maimed or killed before we realize such a dog is unsafe? Current pit bull owners won't have to hand over their dogs, but will face restrictions, including mandatory neutering and spaying.
It's about time.
