I can understand why your last guest blogger would see things that way, but just because you have a bad relationship with your brother you're not gonna go call another friend "brother", you know? I agree with Rico. The old saying goes "Blood is thicker than water". Moms will always be Moms, whether good or bad, as will Dads. We do not get to choose our family. We are born to them. We DO have foster parents and adopted ones as well, but forever and ever, your biological mom is MOM.
So it should be with Aunts & Uncles. They are titles specific and exclusive to a family.
Maybe the answer lies in the creation of a new word to take these circumstances into consideration.
