When you visit the swamp you're grateful when you escape with a point. A late goal on a nifty backhand by Gary Roberts gave Toronto a tie in a game they deserved to win. It was the first time this season the Leafs overcame a third period deficit.
Watching tonight's game reminded me of one of the great mysteries to come out of Leaf Land in recent years. In the 2001-2002 season, Corey Schwab backed up Curtis Joseph in Toronto. When Cujo went down with a broken hand, Schwab filled in admirably going 12-10 with a 2.74 goals against average. For reasons I still don't understand, the Leafs made no attempt to keep Schwab as a back up and signed Trevor Kidd during the off-season instead. Kidd for Schwab sounds like a wash to me in which case it makes more sense to keep the status quo. Schwab ended up in New Jersey backing up Martin Brodeur and tonight he was the difference in what should have been a third Leaf victory in a row.
