There's a famous deleted scene in Pulp Fiction when Mia Wallace asks Vincent Vega if he's an "Elvis man or a Beatles man".  Mia Wallace believes you can tell a great deal about a person by their answer to this question.  Today we have another question that is equally as revealing.  The answer to this question says more about a person than any other I can think of.  This question is none other than Widescreen or Fullscreen?

I can't enjoy a movie unless it's the Widescreen (or Letterbox as it was once known) version.  When renting The Matrix Reloaded last weekend, I grabbed the first DVD box I saw on the shelf and proceeded to the checkout counter.  As the Rogers drone was scanning my file for late fees, I noticed I had inadvertantly grabbed the Fullscreen version and immediately made a bolt back to the shelf to swap it for the Widescreen version.  There are a few reasons for my strong preference.

  • I strongly believe movies should be seen exactly as the Director intended them to be seen.
  • The pan and scan style of Fullscreen means you're only seeing part of the movie.
  • Widescreen is the natural viewing shape for those of us with two eyes.

I'm not alone in this obsession.  Widescreen advocates are a vocal bunch.

"This film has been modified from its original version. It has been formatted to fit your screen." - My worst nightmare.
