In a recent blog entry I questioned whether a tune can be considered cool if it's being played on CHUM FM. I pondered whether being played on an MOR station was the kiss of death for a tune, no matter how good it is. I've been giving this concept a great deal of thought lately.
I've come to the realization that we can't blame a tune for being added to the play list of an inoffensive and bland radio station. Since writing that entry, I've heard songs from Our Lady Peace and The Tragically Hip on CHUM FM while underging physiotherapy. Those are two of my favourite bands of all time, as you'll see in HyperLists. Having one of their ballads played on CHUM FM did not lessen their coolness. Judging from the emails I received in response to that posting, many of you agree. As one person noted, CHUM FM probably played the hell out of Green Day's Time Of Your Life. That's still a great tune, right?
Sometimes even Soccer Moms can get behind a decent tune. I'm sure one of them has even blasted Pearl Jam's Better Man in their Volvo while sipping their Arabian Mocha Sanani from Starbucks. Perish the thought.
