My ball team, Raging Storm, has never had a sub-.500 season. Going into last night's game, we were stuck at .500 and looking to break out.
We put up 14 runs and shut down the TPS Warriors in the first, giving us a two touchdown lead after one. That's when Kic gave one of his motivational speeches. He didn't want us letting up, thinking we had this in the bag. He wanted us to keep going, to keep hitting, to keep playing hard. Personally, I save my Win One For The Gipper speeches for decisive moments in important games, but Kic wasn't content with the 14-0 lead, he wanted blood.
We kept rolling, and before long we were up by 25. This is when the ump started coming down on us. Naturally, if we gapped a ball we were running for a double. The ump started calling plays quickly, forcing doubles into singles and ensuring nobody took an extra base. There's no mercy rule, but the ump thought we were running up the score, and he let us know he wasn't a happy camper.
From that point on, we all moved along one base at a time. My sixth hit in my sixth at bat was a nice line drive that would easily have me at second base, but I held up at first. Then, when Engell laced one, I held at second, and so on and so on and so on. It wasn't much fun, but for the first time since I can remember, we were too dominant for our own good.
The final score was 32-6, but it easily could have been 52-6. I just hope we saved a few runs for Monday.
